Picture Post

Just looking at this picture I can hear the glassy ching-ching of the milk crates rattling and the electric hum of the Unigate milk float driving off up the road. Time to get up and get ready for school.

I wonder what these birds do now that everyone buys their milk in a carton from the supermarket?

You hardly see birds in London anymore except for pigeons and magpies. North London has a huge magpie population these days.

I can't remember the last time I saw a sparrow or any of the little birds.

Strange.

It's squirrels that are the new sparrows - there's loads of them round our way! Don't know if they like milk or not though...

Twice a week - Tuesday & Saturday - we still get our milk delivered "doorstep fresh". It's bloody expensive but a great nostalgia trip. Can't remember the last time a bird helped itself to the cream though. Perhaps they know it's all semi skimmed now and not worth the effort - or perhaps it's because we have 4 cats.

It's all magpies, crows, and squirrels around our way too. But I do fancy the sparrows are beginning to make a comeback.

I lived opposite the big dairy & depot on Wood St in Walthamstow when I was student; woke every morning at about 5am to the jingle of the bottles and whirr of those floats. It was strangely comforting.

We've seen starlings return here in large flocks lately - just when I thought they'd become a mere memory of childhood lawns...

Go on Si. Tell us the tale.
Where DID he get his cocoa 3 times every week?

I can't believe it took 8 comments before Ernie got a mention. We all wanted to but it took dickvandyke to take the crate by the handles.

Was that the trees a-rustling? Or the hinges of the gate?
Or Ernie's ghostly gold tops a-rattling in their crate?

Here in Aus, crows were the culprits, they'd take all the cream off the top if you didn't get to the bottles first.

Great photo.

Great photo. I was pleased to see this last summer in Deal, UK. We got our milk delivered back in 1972-73 when we lived there. I remember my mother pouring the cream off for the coffee before we used it on our cereal.

Oh, and when it was snowing and the milk got frozen and escaped the bottle. ah

Damn you :) you have made me nostalgic for milk bottles...

I used to help out on a milk round starting at 3am with the electric milk float - made myself a space right in the middle surrounded by milk crates. And the milkman really did stop off for mysteriously long visits to certain ladies.
