Spent all day yesterday dressed in 1974 gear as an extra in the film 'The Damned Utd' - to be released next year. It was surreal to be in that era again.

I'm impressed. Still got all your old clobber?

Who's playing Cloughie?

Must say I didn't care for the book all that much.

I agree about the book. However, as 'I was there' the first time 'round - when it was pure fact rather than a novel - and it was truly fascinating to see the era re-constructed in such fine detail.

The talented Michael Sheen plays a very good Clough. (He's played Tony Blair, Frost and Kenneth Williams recently). But I really had to look twice when I saw 'Don Revie' coming out of the main door at Elland Rd (just as I had done some 34years ago) leaving having been given the England job. Colm Meaney (Star Trek n most things Roddy Doyle)is the spit of him when be-wigged and be-raincoated.

Timothy Spall and Jim Broadbent also appear. I remain unsure about scouser Stephen Graham (Snatch, This Is England, Arctic Monkeys vids) as Bremner in a ginger wig swapping punches with Keegan at Wembley! A few of the actors are ringers for the players involved. Some, less so.

I'm sure that none of the individuals/clubs portrayed/FA will come out of it well. The real doom (3 day week) and gloom (power cuts) of Britain in '74 should also get a firm nod.

Of course, I'm not 12 any more, so had no need for a tank top, silk scarf and flares! In a heavy wig and bottle green tracksuit bottoms, I chuckled to my ('physio') self, as I shared the outside catering lunch with Shankley, Clarke, Lorimer, Clemence, a 70s bobby and an old fashioned referee.

There is a £5 million budget for the film apparently and I for one will be interested to see the finished article. You can find more on the cast here by the way... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Damned_United
