Fab post. I still can't quite reconcile Donald McGill and George Formby with the notion of 30s prudery. I should point out that you've rather naughtily trimmed the caption from the postcard. While the picture on its own is suggestive, the caption pushes it over into single entendre territory: it orginally read (for those that don't click the BBC link) is "Stick of Rock, Cock?" Which made me spit coffee at the monitor in hysterics, but I'm basically crude...
There was a good drama about Donald McGill and a censorship trial on Radio 4 this afternoon - it kept me very entertained in the Bank Holiday traffic up the A1. Go and have a listen again, if you get the chance.
The sentimental musings of an ageing British expat in words, music, and pictures. Files are only up for a limited time so drink them while they're hot.

I know, that was naughty of me. But it was in the interest of aesthetics, I just preferred it without the caption.
we're off to blackpool today and this has got me right in the mood

This is one reason why I like the Arctic Monkeys so much. Alex Turner must be George's great grandson.
My ancient father in law asked me last week if I could buy him 'one of those lean mean George Formby grills from Argos'
